Tourism Promotion Coordinator

General Statement of Duties:
The Tourism Promotions Coordinator will work with the Explore The Dalles team to satisfy the plans and programs for which The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce is contracted with the City of The Dalles, and answers directly to the President / CEO of the Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce. The Dalles is an amazing destination full of outdoor adventure, deep history which includes the Oregon Trail and Lewis & Clark Expedition Trail, wonderful attractions, breweries and wineries, and is located just 90 minutes East of Portland, Oregon. 
The promotions coordinator is responsible to schedule and assist in carrying out tasks of the marketing strategies which is designed to increase awareness of The Dalles as a visitor destination. This includes, but is not limited to, the culture, history, attractions, and special events that increase The Dalles’ visibility. Tactics should result in increased tourism, representation of The Dalles’ best interests, and strengthening cohesive hospitality partnerships.
Typical Duties, Responsibilities, and Essential Functions:
The following are examples of duties and responsibilities, but do not encompass all job requirements.

  • Work with team to develop objectives and strategies that result in a marketing plan and budget to promote tourism in The Dalles and meets the requirements of the contract with the City of The Dalles.
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual Tourism Budget.
  • Works with a multitude of contractors, hospitality staff and industry peers.
  • Implements annual plan in collaboration with the Explore The Dalles team.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and assist with FAM tours.
  • Responsible to organize and schedule the creation and distribution of advertising, media releases, social media platforms, website, and etc. on tourism-related subjects; including attractions, activities, events, facilities, marketing, and public relations. Contributes creative content for all print, digital, and online materials; either self-producing or contracting design.
  • Works with the team in the production of the annual ‘Explore The Dalles Visitor Guide’.
  • Represents The Dalles’ interests as appropriate with local, regional, and state organizations associated with tourism. This includes Travel Oregon, Gorge Tourism Alliance, ODMO, OCVA, and our Hood-Gorge region. (some of these will be responsibility of CEO)
  • Maintains and assists with the compilation of tourism data and statistical information that may be helpful in designing a marketing strategy for the Visitors Bureau and local business community.
  • Establish Daily practices to accomplish set objectives and goals.
  • Attends tourism related workshops, conferences, and training seminars to keep abreast of new strategies and marketing techniques available to destination marketing and management organizations (DMOs).
  • Greet Visitors for the Visitors Lobby, phone customers, and website inquiries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Work History:
  • Background in Tourism and Hospitality industry with preference given to those with experience working as or for a DMO.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Hospitality, or related field preferred but not required.
Minimum Experience and Skills Required:
At least two to three years of recent tourism experience which includes the following skills and abilities:
  • Able to develop a timeline of marketing strategies with goals.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and public relation skills coupled with the ability to influence others in a positive manner.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality and employs the highest standard of professionalism in communication, conduct, appearance and attitudes.
  • Knowledge of publication layout, design and graphics as well as related editing and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of advertising principles, web-based marketing tactics and experience working with current social media platforms beyond personal use.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with city staff, the public and business community, and to present ideas effectively when appropriate.
  • Knowledge of the group tourism industry, including group tour operators, and meeting/convention planners.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
Public/Community/News Media Relations:
Must understand the importance of how visitors should be treated and the lasting impact of first impressions. Knowledge, ability, and skills to provide community outreach, and assist with regular public presentations. Understand importance of positive visibility, genuine interest in people, accessible and open to news media.
Possesses a positive self-image; confident; approachable; a strong team player; respects people and treats them fairly; ability to exercise self-control and maintain composure in a busy environment, and the ability to handle interruptions.
Strong knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, office record keeping and recording, and office equipment (computers, printers, networks, etc.). Desk top publishing, word processing, data entry, and attention to detail. Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting. Experience with graphic design and Adobe Suite preferred but not necessary.
  • Good vision and hearing.
  • Employee is sitting and standing depending on task, bending, lifting, stooping, walking, and climbing stairs.
  • Employee is required to be able to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
Regular full-time position** ($2,600 - $3,000) per month (DOQ) plus a medical, dental and vision package, and one week of annual vacation (after 1 year and 2 weeks after 2 years).
