(The Dalles) The 3rd Friday in September (9/18) is National POW/MIA Day. Each year in The Dalles, at Kelly View Point on Scenic Drive, we honor those Military Heroes who put Nation before self and during their service either spent time as a Prisoner of War and/or did not make it home. The remains of almost 82,000 Americans are still missing. Approximate numbers from WWII alone total 73,515, Korean War 7,841, Vietnam 1,626, Cold War 126, 6 from conflicts since 1991. Of those more than 41,000 were presumed lost at sea. Efforts to find those men from all wars is constant and continuous.
Due to the current pandemic there will be no formal ceremony by the American Legion or VFW. No speeches, No Chairs for the public, but there will be a Missing Man Table. (wind permitting). There will be an opportunity for citizens to personally pay their respects. The Patriot Guard Riders guarantee that there will be at least one to hold a flag and pay silent homage to those brave men and women who have kept us free. Citizens are invited to walk up close and personal to the Memorial Flags and Monuments at Kelly View Point during this special half hour (6-6:30pm) or to stop by throughout the day. Please bring and wear masks if you are within 6 feet of others.
