WAITING FOR GODOT CONTACT: Elaine Thompson, Marketing Board Chair Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association Widely considered the most important play of the 20th century, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot opens Friday, November 10, at Wy'East Middle School. Since it was first staged 60 years ago, theatre artists, critics, scholars and audiences have come to embrace this classic tragicomedy as a modern masterpiece. A funny and deeply human story, the play centers on two tramps, Didi and Gogo, who wait by the side of a road for their meeting with the mysterious Godot – a figure who may or may not arrive and is never explained. As they struggle to make sense of their predicament, their hilarious conversations and clownish games help them to pass the time. They may argue and make up, play word games, perform vaudeville routines, speculate, joke and ponder life’s greater questions, but they never lose hope. Somehow, within this simple plot, Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece explores the most profound questions of our existence. Described as “one of the most noble and moving plays of the twentieth century…suffused with laughter and tenderness for the whole human perplexity,” Godot celebrates the hum an spirit’s ability to persevere. At once harrowing and hilarious, riveting and riotous, Waiting for Godot is ultimately a play about Hope: bedeviled, deferred, but never extinguished! It is a play about tenacity and resilience! It is a play about camaraderie and friendship! It is a play about what Tennessee Williams once called “That long delayed, but always expected ‘something’ that we live for…” Directed by Tom Burns, with a talented cast including Kathleen Morrow as Didi, David Dye as Gogo, Gregory Gilbertson as Pozzo, Ashly Will as Lucky and Abby Rankin as The Child. Waiting for Godot continues November 10, 11, 12, 17, and 18 at 7:00 p.m., with matinees on November 13 and 19 at 2:00 p.m. Wy’East Middle School Performing Arts Center theatre, 3000 Wy’East Road, Hood River.
