When the Columbia Gorge Regional Skills Center opens late this month on The Dalles Campus of Columbia Gorge Community College, students will have access to one of the more technologically advanced rapid prototype facilities within the region. As technology evolves, it has become more user (student/faculty) friendly. What was once 400 level course work can now be worked into a single assignment for a 100 or 200 level design, fabrication, welding, or art class.
In addition to having the most recent versions of several kinds of prototyping machines, the college will also be home to the first ever Squirt3l Ceramic 3D printer, built by artist and innovator Bri Murphy. Bri is a visiting artist who will be offering a lecture and presentation on Zoom this Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. The zoom link is attached.
This will be a "TED Talk" style lecture to the community at large.
Artist and innovator Bri Murphy will be at CGCC to create a piece of Post Digital Ceramic artwork in the new Skill Center.
Bri is an innovator in the field of Fine Art Ceramics and specializes in the exploration of what is collectively known within the world of Fine Arts as "Post Digital Processes" which is any art form that embraces digital tools as valid parts of the artist's toolbox.
Bri Murphy is an interdisciplinary artist, who combines digital technologies such as 3D printing with more traditional materials, influenced by her background in ceramics. Her work explores notions of American identity through the deconstruction of its mythologies – from busts of the Founding Fathers to treasured prose such as the Declaration of Independence. In addition to her exhibition record, Bri is an active researcher and tinkerer, and has given several guest lectures and workshops, most notably at the 2019 NCECA conference in Minneapolis.
Bri began her career as an artist selling her drawings to her mom for 25¢ apiece, spending her childhood years in Essex Junction, Vermont. She holds an MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University as well as Bachelor’s degrees in Ceramics and Art Education from SUNY New Paltz. She is the former Gallery Director at the LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
